Location and Fishing Information
San Juan River Fly Fishing - Aztec Package - The San Juan River, located in Northwestern New Mexico, is one of the most famous tail-water trout fisheries in the world. This river is a desert version of a fly fishing paradox: big trout on tiny flies. The San Juan is a hatch-matching dream, offering numerous hatches year round. Gushing out of Navajo Dam, the San Juan's most productive trout stretches are from the dam downriver 3 plus miles to the NM Highway 173 Bridge.
Best Rainbow Water in the United States according to Trout Unlimiteds "Americas 100 Best Trout Streams". This river is world famous for its trout fishing. The San Juan is a lunker-infested piece of tailwater with an amazing fish density an estimated 20,000 trout per square mile.
Quality Water Float Trip.
Our float trips are the best way to fully experience fly fishing for huge rainbow and brown trout on the San Juan River. This is a three-mile adventure through the San Juans Quality Water. Well start at the Texas Hole and complete the trip three miles down stream. This section has about 15,000 fish per mile that average 15-20 inches or more in length. This trip is a must for your first time on the San Juan River. It is a relaxing way to fish and it gives you the opportunity to see a lot of the river. Bring your waders on the float trip because your guide may want to wade some select spots along the way.
Youll be fishing among the spirits of the ancient ones. Well be guiding you in the land of the Navajo. The Anasazi Indians also roamed this area many centuries ago. The Anasazi, who inhabited this area from about 200 to 1300 AD, descended from a prehistoric group of nomadic hunter-gatherers, dubbed the Clovis people, who hunted many animals such as mammoth, bear, rabbit and fish, possibly the first to migrate to the continent. So, when your arm needs a rest from hauling in the monster trout of the San Juan our guides will be happy to discuss the history of this amazing region

Available Dates:
The San Juan River is a Year Round Fishery
The fish are plentiful and can always be caught on this river in any weather, on any day of the year. The water temperature at the dam stays nearly constant year-round at 40-42 degrees. This helps to produce a constant insect hatch for the fish to feed on. There is estimated to be an average of 100,000 insects per square meter in the river. So anytime is a good time to fish the San Juan River.
During the spring, from April thru June, the flows can be high from runoff releases. Fishing access can be almost impossible unless you fish from a drift boat. Monitor the flows closely during the spring.
The summer months can get very hot and dry. There are daily hatches with lots of fish activity. The crowds can be very large so its a good idea to use a guide on a float trip in order to get away from the crowds of waders.
Fall is the most beautiful time with great weather and fishing and the crowds start to die out during the middle of the week.
Winter, the crowds are smaller except for holiday weekends. Most folks don't enjoy fishing during the harsh winter climate. No need to start your morning too early or you'll probably be breaking the ice off of your rod guides.
