Available Dates:
November & December offers some great spring and early summer fishing. The backcountry rivers throughout the Central Plateau have had a good winter eak, the fish are active and hungry, and haven't seen an anglers since May. Dry fly can be limited to a couple of hours in the afternoons, but good nymph fishing for the remainder of the day. On Lakes the smelt are spawning inging trout into the shallows for some exciting action along the beaches and stream mouths. The migratory runs have finished in the Lake Taupo tributaries but good fishing in backcountry areas around Taupo begins.
January & Feuary are the warmest summer months with good dry fly fishing, with options galore around the region.
March & April, dry fly starts to slow down especially towards April but hatches will still occur in the afternoons. The rest of the day will offer some great nymph fishing, fish are in peak condition. Some of the biggest fish of the season are often caught in these months.
May Autumn fishing at its best, Migratory runs start on the Lake Taupo tributaries. There are some very big trout caught in this month. Cooler temperature now but general nice days in the high teens centigrade.
June to October winter fishing mode, the Taupo region having very good fishing. Cool weather 10 to15C during the day, lots of migrating trout but you will share it with plenty of other anglers.
"Your hospitality and excellent cooking have been superb!
The "Retreat" is truly a magical place, with superior accomodations and a view that literally nvever ends. I'd come back just for these experiences. Your excellent guide enabling me to catch my first 10lb plus trout and many more big ones has made my stay a memory of a lifetime."

Jim DeGolia ~ United States "Great 6 days. Terrific view and relaxiing atmosphere thanks to a gracious host. Guide service first rate. Recent rains raised the rivers but our guide knew where to go for quality fishing (up to 10lbs). The Retreat is no place to try to maintain a diet though. Richard puts out a huge meal - Really good."
