Location and Fishing Information

South America's No.1 Fishing Experience - Both lodges are situated in Chilean Patagonia, in absolutely the very best spots in the country for fishing diversity.
Typical questions and answers:

QUESTION:Looks extremely scenic, lovely place. The fishing I assume is for Rainbows and Brown Trout. Do you get steelhead and salmon.?
ANSWER: In Rio Puelo, there are Brown trout and Rainbow trout, 1.5 to 5 kgs. There are also Steelhead, but not in huge quantities.
From December to March, there are Atlantic Salmon and Chinook Salmon from 15 to 20kgs
In our Green Baker Lodge further south, there are Rainbow trout and Brown trout from 1 to 4kgs. There are also Chinook Salmon in the nearby rivers from 12 to 15kgs where we would need to get to because the area where we have the cabins, there are falls which stop the salmon swimming up from the sea.

QUESTION:To try and get an idea how good the fishing is.. how many fish can be caught and released in an average day by a reasonable angler and what would be a min and max in size terms. I appreciate conditions and ability varies greatly.
ANSWER: In Rio Puelo, 5 to 8 trout of 2 to 6kgs can be caught in one day.
In Rio Baker, 10 to 30 trout of 1 to 4 kgs can be caught in one day.
Every month of the fishing season is excellent for fishing in both rivers, apart from January in Rio Puelo because the horse flies are a nuisance. Therefore in January, even though the fishing is outstanding, we offer a discount of 10%. However, an insect repellant will keep them away.

QUESTION: Season; what would you consider to be prime time.?
ANSWER: The fishing season in Rio Puelo is from the 10th November until the first Sunday of May. To be perfectly honest, the fishing is fantastic throughout the whole season. April and May there is more chance of rainfall.
In Rio Baker, it is a little better when the glaciers are not thawing, i.e from the 15th October (start of the season there) until the beginning of December, and from March until the first Sunday of May.

QUESTION:Access: Best routes.?
Answer: To Puelo Lodge , a flight from Santiago to Puerto Montt (1.5 hours) and a transfer arranged by us to the lodge.
To Baker Lodge, a flight from Santiago to Balmaceda airport, Coyhaique (via Puerto Montt), where we will arrange for the transfer to the lodge.

QUESTION: Durations: Do you favour any particular length as a minimum stay.?
ANSWER: We advise a minimum of 5 days to a maximum of 7 days, or in Rio Puelo or in Rio Baker
or
3 to 5 days in Rio Puelo, plus one day transfer to Rio Baker and then 3 to 5 days in Rio Baker plus one day for the transfer to the airport and flight back to Santiago.

Both these rivers complement each other as one is to fish big trout with streamers or nymphs, and the other is to fish large quantities with dry fly.
